The National Zoological Department had recorded the highest revenue and the highest number of visitors last year since its establishment, a Department spokesman told the Daily News.
He said that the total revenue earned by the department last year was over Rs 650 million whereas this was Rs 587 million in 2010.
The spokesman said that the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala recorded a Rs 163 million revenue last year while the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage made a revenue of Rs 487 million. The Department had also earned Rs 16 million from other income sources.
He said that during last year, the total number of visitors to the Dehiwala Zoo and the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was 2.4 million, whereas this was 2.3 million in 2010. He said that 1.7 million people had visited the Dehiwala Zoo and 728,400 people had visited the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage last year.
