Unauthorised jumbo keepers get bail

KANDY – Two suspects remanded for keeping a baby elephant without a permit at a private house in Gannoruwa, Peradeniya were allowed bail by the Kandy Additional Magistrate Shrinith Wijesekara, last Friday (16).

The Magistrate recorded a bail order of Rs. 25,000 in cash with two sureties for Rs. 200,000 each with a bond to the value of Rs. 500,000 each.

The suspects Waruna Lanka Wijesinghe Kannangara and Wathupola Ralalage Somarathne, both from Horana, were ordered to appear in court on September 25 by the magistrate.

The suspects were ordered bail after consideration of a motion tendered to court by their lawyer.

The suspects were earlier remanded till May 20 after being arrested with the baby elephant at a house in Gannoruwa May 08.

When the bail application was considered by the additional Magistrate Shrinith Wijesekara yesterday (16) Kalinga Indatissa P.C. attorneys-at-law Anura Premaratne and Dinesh Senaratne supported the bail application by Attorney-at-law A. Jameel.

Attorneys-at-law Bandara Karunanayake and Shantha Ratnyake appeared for the Environmental Protection organisations.

Assistant Director of Wildlife W. A. A. D. U. Indrajith appeared for the Wildlife Department.

The baby elephant, Saliya, about five years old has been handed over to the Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home.
